Mrs. Pauline Burkher commissioned Mrs. Frank (Ruth) Mosquito, skilled furrier and doll-maker of Anchorage, to make Anna's Inupiaq fur outfit. Mrs. Burkher and Mrs. Mosquito were friends and neighbors at Mary's Igloo, Alaska, in the 1930s. This outfit is representative of Inupiaq Eskimos of the Seward Peninsula Region. The parka and pants are of sicsic squirrel. The parka has a decorative border of black and white calfskin, and a ruff of beaver and wolverine. The usual wolf ruff was too heavy for a doll garment. The boots and mittens are of white calfskin with red-dyed sealskin soles and red and white yarn braided ties. Pauline Burkher came to Alaska from Indiana in 1924. The Burkhers taught in Bureau of Indian Affairs schools from Barrow to Ketchikan for 18 years. Their two sons were born at Mary's Igloo, northeast of Nome, without a doctor. After moving to Anchorage in 1944, Howard became an electronics engineer and supervised 92 radio stations in BIA schools, hospitals, and government boats while Pauline managed the office. Pauline helped establish a school at the Alaska Native Hospital and served as head teacher there for 14 years. |
