Natalia Shelikof Chapter

Kodiak, Alaska

The Russian Peasant outfit, donated by Betts Johnson and Debbie Refior, both members of the Natalia Shelikof Chapter, is included because of the tremendous influence the early Russian settlers had in Kodiak.

Kodiak Island was one of the first places in Alaska that the Russians settled.  The village of Three Saints Bay was established before 1784, with the first school in Alaska established by the Russian Orthodox priests at Three Saints Bay in 1785.

The Russian colony moved to the present site of the town of Kodiak about 1792.
